ALOS PALSAR Data
UNAVCO does not keep ALOS PALSAR data in the WInSAR archive, except for a few special cases
(see ancillary data).
The
Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) provides ALOS PALSAR scene files in their 'L1 Data Pool.'
Information about L1 Pool holdings can be searched using the UNAVCO
WInSAR Search tool online, but you must go to
ASF to download the data, and have an ASF account.
NOTICE: Reports of problems with ALOS PALSAR data from ASF can be found
here.
Ordering ALOS Scenes
To find and order ALOS scenes not yet in the ASF L1 Data Pool, use
JAXA's
AUIG (ALOS User Interface Gateway)
(use guest login, see below) and save the '.csv' file.
Then send the csv file to WInSAR at UNAVCO (winsar@unavco.org).
See the detailed instructions below for identifying scenes not yet in the L1 Data Pool.
Currently there are ASF UPASS proposals allowing WInSAR to order data for North America,
Central and South America, and Indonesia. If your needs are other than these please send an email to
UNAVCO (winsar@unavco.org).

HOW TO SEARCH AND ACCESS ALOS PALSAR L1.0 DATA
David Sandwell dsandwell@ ucsd.edu
March 13, 2008
Background: All ALOS data are stored at the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) so their global
catalog is complete. However if you are not a JAXA PI and you live in North or South America
you must get your data through the Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF). The ASF has all the
ALOS data for North and South America (2-4 week delay after acquisition) as well as some
other global data that was requested by individuals or groups such as WInSAR. You download
your data files from ASF but the most complete search comes from JAXA.
1) Apply for access to the L1 data pool.
https://ursa.asf.alaska.edu/cgi-bin/login/guest/
new user - this step may take an e-mail or phone call
2) Search the JAXA AUIG site:
https://auig.eoc.jaxa.jp/auigs/en/top/index.html
Login user: GUEST999, pw: AuigV3.0 (or whatever guest login is shown under the "Login" button on the left side)
Click on "Services -> Order and Obs requests"
for "Search Type" check "Archives" only
for "Sensor" check "PALSAR" only
for "Search Method" check "Rectangle", "Path/Frame", or other choice.
You can draw a retangle on the map in place of entering numeric values by hand in the form.
Enter "Obs Day" values wanted (time range).
Choose FBS,FBD, polarization, and look angles (off-nadir angles) desired, in lower panel.
Click on the Search button on the very bottom.
A map of some scenes found appears after the search completes. Click on a scene center
on the map to see complete metadata details about that scene.
The map only shows some of the scenes found, the ones listed in the table below the map,
which are only part of all the results (unless oyu found few results).
If your search result exceeds 1000 scenes found, nothing is displayed.
Be sure to look at the Detail page.
To save results as a .csv file, click on the menu choice "Options -> CSV"
using the "Options" button at the bottom center of the window.
3) Paste the A-names from the .csv file from your search into the USRA site.

Paste the A-names into the window, Find Granules, and wait.

In this case there are three flavors of data.
A - The search found only 10 granules. The missing 2 are still at JAXA
B - The first 4 granules are not in the L1 pool because they have not been ordered yet.
C - The last 6 are in the L1 pool and ready to download.
(One can go directly to the L1 pool and do a command F search on individual names as well to avoid the Express Order.)
4) Download the data.
